WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TAKING AKKERMANSIA PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENT?

When taking Folona Akkermansia muciniphila probiotics supplement, you can expect an initial adjustment period (1-4 weeks) with potential mild digestive changes, such as increased gas, bloating, or loose stools. These symptoms usually subside within the first 14 days or if you discontinue the product. Over time, you may notice improvements in gut health and overall well-being.

Read below to understand down to the cellular levels what happens inside your body during the initial adjustment period (Week 1-4):

Our digestive system includes stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Each organs play a different role in metabolizing different types of foods. An underperforming gastrointestinal system is where one or more organs don’t function at their full capacity, leading to bloating, difficulty in digesting fatty foods, etc.

Akkermansia probiotics, once stabilized (i.e. successfully attached to our intestinal wall, this usually takes place within the first 2-3 days of taking the supplement), will secrete a protein called P9 that triggers series of cascading signal pathways to activate all parts of the digestive system (that may have otherwise stayed inactive).(1)

One of the most notable and most studied signal pathways activated by Akkermansia is the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). The P9 protein secreted by Akkermansia activates the production of GLP-1  by the small intestine. GLP-1 is the key hormone to an optimal metabolism. The few major functions of GLP-1 are:

  1. Suppress appetite
  2. Facilitate insulin secretion from the pancrea to metabolize blood glucose
  3. Stimulate the burning of fat cells for energy expenditure.

Mild digestive symptoms (fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, painful bowel movements, etc.) within the first 2-4 weeks of starting the Akkermansia probiotic are indicative that the probiotic is working. Any significant change in one's diet, (either by consuming more high fiber whole foods, or taking a new probiotics) will initially result in digestive issues, these are temporary and will dissipate as our digestive system stabilizes into a more efficient operation.

As our digestive system learns to operate at higher efficiency, their regular operation is expected to be disrupted during the “training” process. Once our digestive system masters the improved method of operation dictated by the probiotics, the result is a well-balanced gut health and robust metabolism. It typically takes around 90 days to see significant changes, but you may start noticing some benefits sooner. Once your gut microbiome has adjusted following the introduction of Akkermansia, you may experience improved digestion, increased energy levels, and a general sense of well-being. Some research suggests that Akkermansia may also play a role in managing blood sugar levels, weight, and even boosting the immune system.

What are your experience with Akkermansia probiotics? Did you have any initial discomfort? Was the improvement in your gut health noticeable? We’d love to hear your experience.
