5 STEPS TO STAYING HEALTHY INDOORS, MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY

It is not surprising that practicing social distancing is not as easy as it sounds. As Aristotle said, “Man is by nature a social animal. Anyone who [...] is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. ” If you feel unmotivated, sluggish, or any change in your mental and physical health during this surreal lockdown, you are not alone!

Below are a few tips to shine through this time:

1. Nutrition: Researchers have found that nutrients from food not only ensures the proper function of organs and tissues but also combat depression and boost mood. 10 nutrients that have a profound impact on maintaining normal brain function: calcium, chromium, folate, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and zinc. Fresh produce is packed with these 10 nutrients.

It's a good idea to have a plan before you stock up on groceries to ensure you pick up the right things. Fresh produce such as berries, broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans freeze well; and sturdy veggies like brussel sprouts, pumpkin and sweet potatoes keep for a long time outside the freezer.

2. Stay hydrated: many studies show that a fluid loss of just 1% is enough to cause harm to brain functions, leading to impaired mood and concentration. Health authorities suggest half a gallon of water a day for adults.

Start the day by filling up a half gallon container with water and drink from it throughout the day to make sure your body stays hydrated with the necessary amount of water.

3. Stay physically active: whether it is breaking a sweat on a treadmill, or pumping up your endorphins through a rigorous workout session on Youtube, or dancing the night away with your significant other in the living room, try to raise your heart beat for at least 30 minutes every day. Not only does exercise keep joint pain at bay, but it also helps you view life through rosy lenses.

4. Sleep: Sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake. Try to set up a routine bedtime and ensure you give your body 7 to 9 hours of sleep everyday.

5. Keep your house clean: regularly tidy and clean your living space to keep the harmful microorganisms away and enhance your mood.
